Description
Southwire Surge Guard 34931 is a portable 120-volt, 30 amp full-protection RV power protector designed to monitor campground power before it reaches your RV. It provides 2,450 joules of surge protection and automatically disconnects power when unsafe electrical conditions are detected.
Unlike a basic diagnostic surge protector that only identifies certain pedestal problems, the Southwire Surge Guard 34931 continuously monitors incoming power, displays voltage and amp draw, and protects against problems originating at the campground pedestal or within the RV electrical connection.
Southwire Surge Guard 34931 Full RV Power Protection
The Southwire Surge Guard 34931 provides protection against several electrical conditions that can affect a 30 amp RV connection:
- Power surges
- Open ground
- Open neutral
- Low voltage below 102 volts
- High voltage above 132 volts
- Reverse polarity
- Miswired campground pedestal
- Overheating at the plug or receptacle
- Elevated ground-line current
- Low or high electrical frequency
When a monitored condition falls outside the unit’s operating limits, the protector disconnects power rather than allowing unsafe campground electricity to continue flowing into the RV.
Continuous Voltage and Amp Monitoring
The built-in English-language LCD display continuously shows RMS voltage and amp draw. This gives the RV owner more information than a basic LED diagnostic chart and helps identify changing electrical conditions while appliances are operating.
The Southwire Surge Guard 34931 also uses multi-mode surge suppression to absorb damaging voltage spikes. Its 2,450-joule rating is designed for 120-volt, 30-amp RV electrical service.
Automatic Power Restoration and Air-Conditioner Protection
After acceptable power is restored, the unit automatically resets. A 10-second startup sequence allows the protector to analyze the incoming connection before supplying power to the RV.
The 128-second reset delay helps protect the RV air-conditioning compressor by preventing power from being restored immediately after an interruption. This delay gives system pressure time to equalize before the compressor attempts to restart.
Optional Wireless Monitoring
The Southwire Surge Guard 34931 is compatible with the optional Southwire 40301 Wireless LCD Display. The wireless display is sold separately and allows compatible power information and fault conditions to be viewed from a more convenient location in or around the RV.
The 34931 includes its own built-in LCD display and does not require the optional wireless display to provide full electrical protection.

Is the Southwire Surge Guard 34931 Right for Your RV?
This model is intended for RVs equipped with a standard 120-volt, 30-amp shore-power connection. A typical 30 amp RV plug has three prongs.
The Southwire Surge Guard 34931 may be the right choice when:
- Your RV uses 30 amp shore power
- You want automatic protection rather than diagnostic indicators alone
- You want continuous voltage and amp-draw monitoring
- You want protection from low and high voltage
- You want automatic power restoration after acceptable conditions return
- You want a portable protector rather than a hardwired installation
- You may want to add optional wireless monitoring
- You frequently connect to unfamiliar campground pedestals
Who Should Consider a Different Model?
The Southwire Surge Guard 34931 is not intended for an RV with a 120/240-volt, 50-amp, four-prong shore-power connection. A 50 amp RV requires a properly matched 50 amp protector, such as the Southwire Surge Guard 34951.
This model is also not the right choice when you want a permanently installed hardwired protector. Southwire offers separate full-protection hardwired models for owners who prefer an installation inside the RV electrical system.
Southwire 34931 Compared with an Enhanced-Diagnostics Protector
An enhanced-diagnostics model such as the Southwire Surge Guard 44280 identifies campground wiring and power conditions using an LED fault chart and provides 2,100 joules of surge protection.
The Southwire Surge Guard 34931 provides a higher level of protection. It continuously monitors voltage and amp draw, disconnects power during low voltage, high voltage, frequency problems, and other unsafe conditions, and restores power automatically when acceptable conditions return.
Choose an enhanced-diagnostics model when you primarily need pedestal testing and surge protection. Choose the 34931 when you want automatic power management and full electrical protection for a 30 amp RV.
Common Questions About the Southwire Surge Guard 34931
